I always liked to work with clay, working with my hands.
I love the Japanese and Chinese style of pottery and I admire the glazes, the celadons, tenmokus, oxblood copper red made from traditional Chinese recipes. I am fascinated by the alchemy of reduction firing in my gas kiln – the transmutation of dull minerals into exciting deep colours and surfaces that have to be touched.
In order to get such pots in my hands I felt I have to try and make them myself. I have attended ceramics weekends and evening classes in Germany and Switzerland since 1985, learning a lot but never enough to answer all the questions or to quite fill the gap in my skills!
Since 2008 I am a full-time potter, always improving on making pottery and glazes. I mix all my glazes myself, starting from raw materials and I never have enough of experiments and the thrill of opening the (slightly too hot) kiln to see the results!.
I am an active member of Anglian Potters and since May 2008 I hold the position as the selected members secretary. Since April 2012 I am a selected member. I am also a member of the artist-led Eagle Gallery in Bedford
